TDP finds fault with local body quota

VISAKHAPATNAM: Besides taking up programmes to strengthen the party in the district, the TDP will also take up the cause of people in the tribal area by challenging the reservation in local body elections announced by the State Government.
Addressing a press conference after a meeting with party functionaries on Sunday, Rajya Sabha member and in charge of Visakhapatnam and Anakapalle Lok Sabha constituencies Y. Sujana Chowdary and district president Ch. Ayyanna Patrudu said mandal-level meetings would be held in July and in the city in August to strengthen the party. Mr. Chowdary said Congress Government had no moral right to hold rytu chaitanya yatras. The party needed some clarity on organisational issues and a calendar for activities would be prepared.
Questioning the government's commitment in holding election to local bodies, Mr. Ayyanna Patrudu said the reservation could not exceed 50 per cent and the Constitution should be amended for more quota. He faulted the reservation made in the district and said the party would seek legal redress. Seven of the 11 mandals in the scheduled area were reserved for BCs, he said wondering how it could be done. Against the practice of announcing reservations at all-party meetings, the reservation was announced at night, he said.
Mr. Patrudu said the government had failed to provide a remunerative price to paddy. Though a support price of Rs. 1,020 a quintal was announced by the government, farmers were forced to sell it at Rs. 620. The chaitanya yatras achieved nothing though Rs.5 crore was spent. Under the ‘adarsha rytu' government had spent Rs.100 crore picking congressmen for the posts, he alleged.
Party State general secretary and observer Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, MLAs V. Ramakrishnababu, KSN Raju and Ramu Naidu and urban president Peela Srinivasa Rao were present.
